3.16 2023-06-06

New

• Correct Last QSO now handles the set of manufactured QSOs created when logging a candidate QSO containing straddlers. Edits apply to the set of QSOs corresponding to (same time stamp) the last QSO in the log. Editing the call changes all QSOs in the set. Editing the location changes all of the QSOs in the set only when the complete straddler expression is provided. Editing sent and received reports is not supported.
• Tapping the paddle executes the Log > Focus Recent QSO Entry command, for any radio mode.
• Added Polish Straight Key Contest in Other group.
• Added Latvian Mechanical Key Activity in Other group.
• CW Practice mode now supports ARRL Field Day and North American QSO Party.
• CW Practice mode now supports all Inside and Outside QSO Parties.

Changed

• Added default settings for some message special keys.
• Removed the recent change that offset the time stamps for manufactured QSOs to work around a LoTW defect.

• Modified Log Notes behavior. Auto-filled content is bracketed with « and », and is updated when the log rescored. Text entered in an empty note or appended to auto-filled content is not affected by rescoring. Now, for example, when you change a received grid value, the distance value in the notes gets changed too.
• Updated the ARRL Section list: MAR split to NB and NS, GTA changed to GH, NT changed to TER.
• The Sweepstakes exchange field named "check" is year-first-licensed. Other contests use this field for other types of "age", such as operator's age. ARRL Field Day and Winter Field day use this field for entry class. The tooltips for the entry field and the log table column, and the column title, now depend on the name of the contest.
• The name for the "Not Needed QSO" font/color call adornments has changed to "Zero-point QSO". When QSO status is unknown, system default text font and color adornments are used.
• Replaced lawyer prose in About with plain language borrowed from W7AY.
• Updated WRTC 2022 behavior for new rules. Additional changes are likely as rules are clarified.

Fixed

• Sometimes checksheets were enabled in the menu but not visible after changing a log's contest rules. Thanks AI6W.
• Duplicate and Multiplier detection logic for NEQP Inside was broken.
• Duplicate detection wasn't working for straddlers until after the QSOs were logged. The changed logic now reports needed when at least one of the manufactured QSOs will not be a dupe. Thanks AI6W.
• Using Keyboard Mode in the middle of a Magic Message sequence was affecting which message phase was sent. Thanks AI6W.
• Sometimes a new QSO with the SQ flag was being as marked as a multiplier. Wrong, suspects cannot be multipliers and have no point value.
• Was failing to show a direct link for Contest Rules in the Help menu for contests not listed in the WA7BNM Contest Calendar.

New

• The Logging option "WRTC 2022 Referee" enables broadcasting QSOs received from SkookumNet to the LAN using UDP port 12060, in DXlog format. This featured is required for WRTC 2022 on the referee computer. The default is off. When on, logging is disabled so the referee cannot add QSOs to the log. [The referee can, however, edit a logged QSO. That.s not simple to prevent.] The broadcast has been tested by IU1NSA, who declared "it works."
• Yaesu FT891 support. Thanks AI6W.
• Keypad commands "Rotator > Set Rotator n to Long Path" for rotators 1, 2 and 3. The existing Set Rotator commands have been renamed to specify Short Path.

Changed

• Generic Serial now generates Cabrillo QSO records with arbitrarily long info fields. Thanks YL3JD.
• QSO timestamps are modified by a few seconds when logging QSOs for straddlers, to work around a LoTW defect (it rejects ADIF QSOs with the same call and same timestamp). Thanks N5EP.
• The Pandapter Window now behaves more-or-less sanely when it finds more than one external video capture device at startup. See the Panadapter topic in the Other Windows section of Help.

Fixed

• Removed mention of (CWT) adjudication in the Help Book. Thanks AI6W.
• WRTC 2022 was misidentifying multipliers.
• KPA1500 Serial wasn't displaying forward power in the Amplifiers window.

• Virginia QSO Party In Virginia scoring now includes activated county bonus points and multipliers for non-fixed entrants.
• Editing a log table cell now turns on the "document needs saving" indicator (a dark dot inside the close gumball at the left end of the title bar), when the edit is committed using tab or return. Saving the document explicitly or implicitly (as when toggling logs) now saves the edits as expected. Thanks W2RU.
• Updated the start date for Wisconsin QSO Party.
• Added web URL and deleted email URL for submitting Idaho QSO Party logs.
• For QSO parties, now assume that a call with either /M or /P suffix is a rover. Note: this logic can become confused when you append / plus a county beginning with M or P to their call. Instead, omit / and compose your messages using the & token to send the county; for example “CQ NEQP K1GQ &”.
• Revised the URL for AR Cluster spot filtering in the Help menu.
• For QSO parties with entrant outside the target state, do not prefill the county to prevent prematurely declaring a call as not needed.

Fixed

• Version 3.13 broke access to Settings panes except through "gear" buttons. The New Log settings pane was inaccessible. Thanks MØNNQ.
• Cabrillo export for New Mexico QSO Party was missing the report fields. Thanks N5ZGT.
• The ability to log into DX Spider nodes was broken. I don't plan to document this capability because spot filtering syntax and the information in the spot comment field is quite different from ARCluster, but the connection is usable for those who are fluent in dxspider-speak. Thanks G6NHU.

• QSO Party support for Indiana outside, Delaware outside, Illinois inside, Seventh call area inside.
• File > Change Log’s Contest Rules supports entering concurrent QSO parties with a single log; for example, 7QP, NEQP, INQP and DEQP. See the topic Submitting One Log for Multiple Contests in the Cabrillo section of SkookumLogger Help.
• The Activity > Create command has been added to the list of XK-24 commands. Thanks SMØHRP.
• When a QSO entry field has keyboard focus, up arrow and down arrow bump your CW speed.

Changed

• Discovery of video capture devices was sometimes reporting more than one "UVC Camera" device when only one was physically present. The search now ignores Continuity Camera devices, and uses the first discovered device instead of giving up. Thanks N9SE and GØDVJ.
• The KPA1500 forward power meter now displays peak level on a linear scale (was dBm), green between 1000 and 1500, yellow between 1500 and 1800, red between 1800 and 2000 Watts.
• Modified the terminator date-time display in map windows to use a date picker. When the Automatic Terminator option is on, the date picker is disabled and the displayed date updates about once per minute. When the option is off, click a component of the date-time to edit the value with keyboard or increment/decrement the value with the stepper. In either case, the displayed date-time is year-month-day, hour:minute 24-hour UTC (if you care, this is accomplished by forcing the date picker to use the English language Canadian locale). • QSO status now appends "Other radio needs multiplier" (for 2T2R) to candidate QSO status (e.g. "duplicate") instead of replacing that status. Thanks SMØHRP.

Fixed

• Several QSO parties had missing sent report entry fields: AL AZ BC CP FL LA MI NV OH ON QC SC TN.
• The submission URLs for PACC and BC QSO Party were wrong.
• Correct Last QSO was confused by info entry fields containing county-line separators. Now it ignores the separator and everything after. Fixing QSOs for straddlers is best done directly in the log. Thanks AI6W.
• The MAC address for TCP devices (needed only for wake-on-LAN) was being overwritten by a default value at startup.
• Note in the Audio Recording Guide that QSOrder-Menubar requires a Silicon Mac. Thanks N9SE.

• Some windows now have gear buttons at the top right that open the appropriate settings panel for the windows. These panels can be dismissed with File > Close Window.
• Map windows now have text buttons in their toolbars that are shortcuts for commands buried in nested Window > Maps menus.
• File > Import Cabrillo now fills an empty SkookumLogger log with the data contained in a Cabrillo file, for any contest supported by SkookumLogger. See the Log Import, Export and Reports topic in the Help Book.
• Added support for the RSGB 4m CW contest. Thanks GØDVJ.
• Preliminary support for WRTC 2022 has been added based on WRTC 2018, with pending questions about software features required by the rules.

• Added buffering for keyboard CW characters when sending with the YCCC SO2R Box+. Thanks AI6W.
• The background color for Map windows is now the system color for text backgrounds and correctly adapts to the system Dark/Light appearance setting.

• Augmented initialization of audio routing configuration when changing operating mode. For 2T2R the Not Sending, Radio 1 Transmits and Radio 2 Transmits choices are set to Both, Radio 2, and Radio 1 respectively, and choices and blending are enabled. For 1T*R, the three routing choices are set all set to Radio 1, and all choices and blending are disabled.
• The 2023 start dates for RSGB and UKEIDX contests have been updated. Thanks GØDVJ.
• Dysfunctional Practice mode support for NAQP has been removed. Thanks N5EP.
• The internal database containing URLs for rules and log submission has been scrubbed. The logic for the Help Menu items for showing contest rules has been changed to display the Contest Rules Summary page on the WA7BNM Contest Calendar site if there is one, otherwise to display the Contest Rules URL from the internal database.

Fixes

• The Country checksheet was showing a duplicate empty row for each worked country, and omitting rows for unworked countries.
• Sent report entry fields were missing for Generic contests. Thanks AF8A.
• The data source for K4 Mini-Pan A window wasn’t being restricted to Radio 1.
• Multiple phrases in the QSO Notes field were missing spaces between them. Thanks AI6W.
• Logic for extracting items from the DX Cluster spots comment field was omitting the last item.
• Checksheets were not being cleared when resetting a log.
• Winter Field Day was rejecting M in the Class+Category entry field. Thanks N5EP and KB1BPM.

• When a K4 TCP radio is enabled, the Window menu shows a new item named "K4 Mini-Pan" below the Panadapter item. The resizeable window replicates the K4 Mini-Pan content for the main receiver and adds overlays showing the main receiver passband and the transmit frequency offset.

• Changed call sign cleanup logic to not strip /m suffixes.
• Changed Canadian multipliers for NYQPInNY to the standard province/territory list.

3.8 2022-09-09

New

• K4 TCP now changes the "K4 VFO B Different Band" option when Diversity mode changes, so that the option is off when Diversity is on and on when diversity is off. This supports using the subreceiver (with a separate receive antenna) on any band unless diversity is on. The K4D subreceiver bandpass filtering logic gets confused when changing bands with diversity on, with the effect that the subreceiver goes deaf after the band changes -- also fixable by toggling diversity off and back on.
• Rotators > Set Unidirectional Antenna Pattern to Long Path adds 180° to the main lobe bearing when drawing the pattern on a map window. Use this command with a SteppIr antenna controller set to 180° away from your rotator's bearing.
• SkookumLogger now can use the qsorder python app to make recordings of receiver audio. See the "Audio Recording Guide” link at the SkookumLogger Hints web site page.

Changed

• Removed a spurious test when processing incoming spots that was rejecting spots that contained "FT8" or "FT4" (case sensitive) in the spot information field. The mode for these spots is now identified as Data.
• The text of the WWV announcement in the Great Circle Map window is now selectable.
• The delay after resetting a WinKeyer, the first step in enabling, has been increased from 0.5 to 1.0 seconds. If the last enable step, HostOpen, fails with a timeout alert, disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable is usually enough to allow enable to succeed.
• The "Pounce receive frequency change fills QSO entry from nearby activity" option now choses the closest from the set of nearby activities. This helped eliminate an issue where tuning rapidly across many spots would trigger oscillation between two spots, requiring toggling from pounce to run and back to stop the oscillation. Thanks AI6W.
• Scrubbed code for tracking K4 frequencies and extended to handle the independent RIT offset for the second receiver.
• CWT adjudication notes now include the logged value of an error, wrapped in parentheses. Thanks AI6W.
• Cleaned up code relating to UDP broadcasting, preparing for special WRTC requirements.
• Reworked code involved in logging a QSO delivered to a SkookumNet peer. The primary effects are that CW messages sent by the peer are no longer stalled on older macs, and the peer’s log is no longer saved until the peer logs a QSO created on the peer. This was affecting SkookumLogger users during WRTC 2018. The same change may have also reduced a delay in displaying typed characters on the peer. Another message-sending stall happens, even without SkookumNet, when you manually log a QSO (tap return) while a message is sending. For now, doctor says don’t do that. Thanks WA1Z.
• Updated the Time Tracker topic in the Help Book to better explain off times. Thanks AI6W.
• Updated log submission URLs for the Tennessee QSO Party.

• Clearing a QSO entry pane when an entry field other than Call had keyboard focus and the field was not empty was failing to clear that field. Thanks W2RU.

  • Added BY to the list of entity codes for which call areas are multipliers for EU entrants in the WAEDC contest.
  • Added 13cm, 9cm and 6cm to Band text commands supported by the Phantom radio. Thanks K2QO.
  • Modified the age entry to support cut number detection for the All Asian contest. With this change, SkookumLogger cannot correctly open previous All Asian logs.
  • Moved the Log Table Columns sub-menu from the View menu into the Log menu. Moved the Activity Table Columns sub-menu from the View menu into the Activity menu. Moved the Maps menu to a sub-menu in the Windows menu. Moved the Morse menu to a sub-menu in the Messages menu. This doesn't affect any keyboard shortcuts. Removed the View, Maps, and Morse menus from the main menubar. I generally don't like nested menus, but the prior arrangement was problematic on laptops with notches in the middle of the menubar.
  • When Keyboard Morse mode is enabled in 1T*R, the most recent-recently focused QSO entry field gains keyboard focus so that typing will immediately send CW.

  Fixed

  • The CW messages queue was stalling when attempting to send an empty message. Thanks W6FB.
  • Some versions of the XK-24 were not being discovered. Thanks AI6W.
  • SkookumLogger crashed if the "Table update interval" value in Activities preferences was set to zero. The lower limit is now 0.5 seconds. Thanks AI6W.

  • Support for “weekly” contests, allowing creation of new logs with correct start dates when creating the log after the start of the event. Thanks W2RU, AI6W.
  • Items on the radio menus for K4 TCP and FTdx101MP for toggling main and sub receiver antennas.

  Fixed

  • Editing sent exchange fields in the Sent Exchange Editor was badly misbehaving, with some entries overwriting other fields, tabbing between fields skipping over editable fields, and garbled Morse Sent Exchange Templates. Additionally, the Sent Exchange Editor was not being properly reinitialized when changing logs. Thanks KD5YPH.
  • File > Export to Numbers… was failing with an error message about ASCII encoding. Thanks W6FB.
  • When the “Do not use the SCP database” option is on, also disable use of the Exchange Database. The option is automatically enabled for WRTC and CWT. Thanks AI6W.
  • When starting SkookumLogger and a previously enabled WinKeyer was reported as not available (because you unplugged it), SkookumLogger was failing to reset the enabled state to off. Thanks AI6W.
  • The file embedded in 3.5 for adjudicating a CWT log was malformed. Thanks AI6W.
  • File > Statistics Report was crashing SkookumLogger when applied to a log with zone multipliers. Thanks JH5GHM.
  • The Section Checkoff window content wasn’t being reset by Log > Reset Log. Thanks W22RU.

  3.5 2022-06-03

  New

  • When you type a character in a QSO Entry field, SkookumLogger sets the state of Keyboard Morse Mode to match the state of caps lock.
  • Added three more bands to the six bands above 6m: 13cm, 9cm and 6cm. [The K3 and K4 can support all 9 bands above 6m via their transverter features, tracking and setting bands and frequencies. I’ve tested only K4. Please be alert for changed behavior in your normal operating scenarios. Known issue: there are no activity tables for the added bands.] Thanks VE3DS.
  • SkookumLogger now detects a band name entered in a Call field and changes to the band when you type return. Band names are numbers followed by M or CM, like 2M and 13CM.
  • When all of the first 10 QSOs in a log are outside the contest period, SkookumLogger now posts an alert warning you to check the start date in Time Tracker.
  • Added RSGB Platinum Jubilee HF CW, HF SSB, VHF.

  Changes

  • Changed Indiana QSO Party multipliers to not per-band. Thanks N9SE.
  • Removed the no more than one limit on the number of his call tokens in CW messages. The token is processed with type ahead only when it is the first character in the message. Thanks W2RU.
  • Updated start time and bonus points for KY QSO Party.
  • Limit the maximum value of Keying Compensation to 40ms — the key-down duration of a dit at 30 WPM. Larger compensation fills the space following the dit, which is probably not useful.
  • Updated hints pages for antennas and panadapters.
  • Added documentation for Band text command to Help.
  • Added 60m to list of K4 TCP supported bands, which now supports all 20 bands supported by SkookumLogger.

  Bugs

  • A change made to fuzzy match code in the 3.2.2 release last fall seems to have degraded performance in SSB mode. This beta restores the relevant code from 3.2.1. [I couldn’t understand either version well enough to understand how it works. Again, be alert.]
  • SkookumLogger was claiming QSOs had bad received location fields in NEQP Inside. They were not incorrect, the code was.
  • SkookumLogger was failing to initialize the sent exchange location field for NEQP Inside logs to the value from the County field in New Log Sent Exchange preferences.
  • Some Sent Entry Editor entry fields were missing formatters that restrict what can be typed into the field. For example, it was possible to enter CAR NH; the correct formatter ignores spaces. Thanks W1VKE.
  • RSGB Club Championship Data QSOs weren’t per-digital-mode. Thanks GØDVJ.
  • Setting a spot filter containing the buddies token was breaking the filter when the buddies list was empty. Now, when the buddies list is empty, SkookumLogger inserts your contest call. Also improved the UI for adding buddies. Thanks AI6W.
  • Enabling the RX Antenna Overlay in Maps windows wasn’t displaying the receive antenna name in the windows. Thanks GØDVJ.
  • Sometimes grabbing a spot with the Panadapter cursor changed the radio but failed to fill the Pounce QSO Entry fields. Thanks AI6W.
  • When 24-hour time was off and locale was eu_GB, the format of times in Cabrillo files was, err, unexpected. Thanks 2MØGUI and GØDVJ.

  3.4 2022-04-24

  New

  • Added font and color for identifying a call that “Might be multiplier”. This case arises when call-band-mode isn’t enough information to identify dupes, and when the call is a rover. See the Fonts and Colors topic in the Log Window section of Help. You will need to revisit your font and color choices in Logging preferences.
  • Added support for the Medium Speed Test, in the nontest category. This nascent event is described at mst-contest. Thanks W1VKE.
  • Disabled Practice mode for contests that aren’t supported for practicing. The supported contests are listed in The Practice Mode topic of the Other Windows section of Help.

  Changed

  • Toggling Keyboard Mode now toggles the red backlight for the corresponding X-Key keypad key.
  • The web site has moved to a far more reliable host, with the domain k1gq.net replacing k1gq.com. Thanks KM3T.
  • The "Do not use the SCP database" Logging option had no effect. Now it prevents partials matching against the SCP database without blocking matching against the current log and your Exchange database. The option defaults to off and is turned on for CWops Mini-CWT and 2014/2018 WRTC.

  Fixed

  • Activity table column ordering and sizes were not being remembered.
  • Editing some log table fields when Keyboard Morse mode was on was transmitting CW instead of changing field content. Thanks W6FB.
  • Magic Message wasn’t sending anything in contests where the sent exchange had a location field. Thanks KK6MC.
  • CQMM was not restricted to CW only.
  • The Michigan QSO Party start time was incorrect.
  • Exchange guessing wasn’t enabled for Michigan, Ontario and Quebec QSO parties for Outside entrants.
  • Correct Mode was broken for some of the "acknowledge and log" CW messages.

  3.3 2022-04-03

  New

  • Show the current K4 reference level in dBm in the Panadapter window.
  • Automatically send a copy of the Cabrillo log to the Super Check Partial  server when submitting a Cabrillo log to a contest sponsor. Report in the Status Messages window when the send succeeds. Optionally disable automatic sending with a checkbox in the Cabrillo pane of New Log preferences.
  • For Countries, Super Check Partial and CWops Roster databases, use the newer of the internal or the downloaded database files. The internal databases are updated when preparing a release for the App Store.
  • VE2ZEB provided code for the Quebec QSO Party, Canadian Prairies QSO Party, and British Columbia QSO Party.

  Hints

  • Use the {0 token when you are roving in a QSO party. Change your county in the Sent Exchange Editor as needed. The current county is shown in the prompt line, saved when you log a QSO, and sent in place of the {0 token in your CW messages.
  • To record a DVR message (K4 TCP), begin with the keyboard shortcut for Messages > Record Voice Message > Message n, and finish with the keyboard shortcut for Messages > Save Recording. The radio will be switched to transmit mode while recording. Recording is directed into a 90 second buffer and does not change the existing DVR message if you choose Cancel Recording instead of Save Recording.

  • When the My Call preference value is "K1CX" at startup, SkookumLogger Help opens showing the Getting Started topic. This is intended to provide "onboarding" assistance to new users.
  • In the 2T2R operating mode, when a multiplier for the QSO on one radio is needed on the band/mode of the other radio. the QSO status line displays "✦ Other radio needs multiplier ✦".
  • The new "Acknowledge + QSY + Log" message sends the Acknowledge message followed by a QSY request message and logs the QSO. The QSY message is defined in a hidden preference as "R QSY ! ?", where the ! token is replaced a transmit frequency in kHz. For 2T2R, the transmit frequency for the other radio is used. For 1T1R and 1T2R when SkookumNet is not active, the transmit frequency for the QSO entry that doesn't have transmit focus is used. When SkookumNet is active, the run transmit frequency for the selected row in the Peers table is used.

  Changes

  • Revised the approach for detecting loss of communication with radios to prevent false alerts when communication is stalled due to holding a blocking window open too long.
  • Enabling Practice mode in the Practice window now also transfers keyboard focus to the Log window.

  3.2.2 2021-09-05

  3.2.0 had a plethora of issues created when I redesigned the architecture for external devices to handle both serial and TCP devices. 3.2.1 was an emergency patch to deal with a crash potentially affecting many serial radios. In 3.2.2, I’ve addressing additional problems reported by users and cleaned up other serial radio-related issues.

  New features

  • Added visibility menus for each activity table to the View menu, and re-enabled the visibility popup menus on the tables' header rows. GØDVJ provided a good example why you might not want all tables to show the same columns: he sorts on the rotator column when S&P on a band where he has rotatable antennas, and hides the bearing column to save screen space on bands where he doesn't have a rotator.

  Changes

  • The new K3 + P3 radio type implies that there is a P3 panadapter connected to the K3 and turned on. The K3 radio type now implies that there is not a P3.
  • Added support for the 60m band, recognized for K3 and Phantom radios. This prevents a crash. Thanks W2RU.
  • Revised scoring for the UKEICC 80m contest to include points for bonus calls. Thanks GØDVJ.

  Bugs

  • Corrupted packets received from Elecraft radios were causing a crash. Thanks KB3ZGL.

Tapping the paddle while a message is playing now has the same behavior as tapping the escape key. Tapping a keyboard shortcut to send a message while sending with the paddle adds the message to the message queue, which begins playing after you stop sending with the paddle. For 2T2R, SkookumLogger now accounts for PTT tail delay before changing transmit focus when a message ends.

  DO NOT UPDATE WITHOUT READING THESE NOTES. The minimum macOS version has changed, and future releases will be distributed on the Mac App Store.

  This release has many internal changes relating to new and deprecated macOS features. It runs on macOS 11 (BigSur) and on a Silicon Mac (using Rosetta 2). The most significant changes are:

  • The minimum macOS version is now 10.13 (High Sierra).
  • Logs created with this version cannot be opened by earlier versions.
  • Preferences and the Window menu have been reorganized.
  • Help has been thoroughly updated.

  You will need to redo some of your settings:

  • Color choices.
  • Activity table layouts.
  • Antenna configurations.
  • Country aliases.
