NEC Engines
cocoaNEC can use two different NEC engines. One of the engines is a C Language port of NEC-2 named nec2c, and the second engine is the 4.2 version of NEC-4. For details about the engines, see NEC-4.
To choose between the two engines, open the Settings panel:

Grand Central Dispatch
The nec2c had been modified to make use of macOS Grand Central Dispatch. This allows multiple cores of newer Macintoshes to run parts of the engine concurrently, and significantly speeds up complex antenna models.
The FORTRAN based NEC-4 engine can only run in a single core and so does not benefit from Macintosh computers that have multiple cores. However the input and output phases of the CocoaNEC workflow do benefit regardless of which engine is used.
